Elliptic and Internet Watch Foundation Join Forces to Combat Crypto Financing of Child Abuse Material
In a significant move to tackle the financing of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) through cryptocurrency, blockchain intelligence firm Elliptic has partnered with the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF). This collaboration aims to disrupt and dismantle the financial networks that facilitate the spread of such illegal content online.
Strengthening Partnerships to Combat CSAM
The Internet Watch Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing online child sexual abuse materials. As part of its ongoing efforts, the IWF has welcomed Elliptic as a new member, a decision that enhances the organization’s capabilities in tracking and analyzing cryptocurrency transactions linked to CSAM.
According to a 2024 report conducted by IWF, an alarming 60.87% of child abuse websites offering payment options accept cryptocurrencies, underscoring the urgent need for effective intervention strategies. The prevalence of cryptocurrencies on these sites has notably risen, prompting U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bill Cassidy to label crypto as the "payment of choice for child abuse material."
Real-Time Monitoring and Alerts
Through this partnership, Elliptic will gain access to the IWF’s suite of services, including virtual currency alerts that provide critical real-time data. This data will enable Elliptic to identify cryptocurrency wallets and networks used in transactions related to the purchase of CSAM. By leveraging this information, the firm aims to empower its clients to prevent transactions associated with child abuse and exploitation.
Derek Ray-Holl, acting CEO of the IWF, commented on the collaboration, stating, “IWF analysts find images and videos of some of the worst types of child sexual abuse on websites that profit from the sale of this horrific content. By working with us, Elliptic can help to disrupt the spread of this criminal imagery and stop this type of illegal purchasing in its tracks.”
Growing Trends in Digital Exploitation
The rising trend of CSAM websites utilizing cryptocurrencies for transactions has been documented over the years. A November 2022 report from the IWF indicated that the number of CSAM websites accepting crypto payments had doubled almost annually since 2015, highlighting a troubling trajectory. With 1,014 such sites recorded in 2022, the urgency to combat this trend has never been more crucial.
In light of the challenges posed by privacy coins, like Monero, which are increasingly being used by CSAM websites, Elliptic aims to adapt and enhance its strategies. Privacy coins may provide the anonymity that some criminals seek, complicating traceability efforts. However, Elliptic asserts that these tokens are often used in conjunction with traceable assets, providing opportunities for investigators to identify patterns and connections.
Looking Ahead: A Unified Effort
As part of its mission to create a safer digital environment, Elliptic is committed to not only integrating vital data into its blockchain intelligence platform but also to actively participating in strategic discussions surrounding payment systems exploited in CSAM distribution. Giuseppe Fersini, the Head of Intel at Elliptic, expressed the firm’s dedication to supporting the IWF’s mission.
The IWF also plans to expand its membership into the blockchain and cryptocurrency industry, recognizing the vital role that organizations like Elliptic play in the fight against online exploitation of children.
Through this collaboration, Elliptic and the IWF are not only addressing an urgent issue but are also setting an important precedent for the cryptocurrency industry’s involvement in promoting digital safety and preventing the financing of child sexual abuse material.
