Los Angeles police officers were forced to open fire on a man wielding a machete in front of the Crypto.com Arena early Sunday morning, sparking a swift law enforcement response and subsequent investigation.

Incident Details

At approximately 9:12 a.m. on July 13, 2025, officers with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) were dispatched to the intersection of Olympic Boulevard and Figueroa Street following reports of a man threatening a security guard with a machete. The exact circumstances leading up to the dispatch remain limited as authorities have not yet released detailed information about what occurred before officers arrived on the scene.

According to early eyewitness accounts and video footage shared with KTLA, the man was pursued briefly by LAPD officers in the vicinity of the Crypto.com Arena before police discharged their weapons. The confrontation unfolded visibly in front of the highly frequented sports and entertainment venue, drawing attention from bystanders and causing disruptions in the area.

Emergency Response

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) confirmed their crews responded to a call of an officer-involved shooting at 1158 S. Figueroa St., the location adjacent to the arena. Upon arrival, paramedics found the machete-wielding individual unconscious and not breathing. He was transported to a nearby hospital but reportedly went into cardiac arrest during transit.

As of 10:20 a.m. Sunday, no official update on the condition or identity of the man has been provided by authorities, and his age has not been disclosed.

Traffic and Public Safety Advisory

In the wake of the incident, the LAPD Central Division issued an alert on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) at 9:33 a.m., informing the public of street closures in downtown Los Angeles related to the ongoing investigation. Figueroa Street was closed between Pico Boulevard and 12th Street, though city officials later clarified that LA Live Way would remain open to accommodate fans attending a scheduled Sparks basketball game.

Law enforcement officials are urging the public to avoid the area to facilitate investigative and emergency activities.
