Franklin Man Accused of Stealing Millions in Cash and Cryptocurrency from Country Legend George Jones’ Widow
WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Tenn. — A Franklin resident has been charged with stealing millions of dollars in cryptocurrency and cash from Nancy Jones, the widow of famed country music star George Jones. The arrest follows an extensive investigation initiated by the Franklin Police Department last week.
According to court records, Kirk West, 58, was taken into custody at Nashville International Airport on Thursday, July 24, less than 24 hours after police launched their inquiry. Nancy Jones reported on July 23 that West had stolen approximately $400,000 in cash and a Ledger cryptocurrency wallet from secure safes inside her Franklin home around June 26. The affidavit reveals that just before the theft, Nancy Jones instructed her granddaughter to secure valuables, suspecting infidelity by West, her long-time romantic partner. Upon inspection, the granddaughter found the cash missing along with the Ledger wallet, which contained about 5.5 million units of the digital currency XRP. Each token was valued at roughly $2.10 at the time, amounting to over $11.6 million in stolen crypto assets. As of July 25, the value of the missing XRP has increased to approximately $17 million.
Nancy Jones shared with authorities that West was the only other individual with access to the wallet’s private key—a crucial security code. With the aid of attorneys, she was able to recover approximately 5 million XRP tokens but still lost nearly 483,205 XRP, which is now worth close to $1.5 million.
Following the discovery, Nancy Jones evicted West from her residence on June 28. West allegedly contacted her thereafter, promising to return $5 million of the crypto assets, claiming that was all she would receive.
West faces charges of theft exceeding $250,000, with his bond set at $1 million ahead of an October 23 court hearing.
Background of Relationship and Previous Legal Issues
The relationship history between West and Nancy Jones dates back to 2013. After George Jones passed away in 2013, Nancy listed her home for sale, during which West toured the property claiming interest on behalf of investors. Court documents describe this approach as his “modus operandi” for meeting affluent, potentially vulnerable women.
West began a friendship with Nancy Jones offering support in her time of loss, later moving into a separate wing of her home and starting a romantic relationship. Records indicate that West was financially dependent on Nancy Jones, who covered living expenses, vacations, and even provided a vehicle for him.
West has a criminal history that includes a federal conviction for bank fraud in 2016. He was found guilty of submitting fraudulent financial documents to obtain loans from Reliant Bank. Despite pleading guilty and agreeing to pay restitution exceeding $900,000, Nancy Jones reportedly covered his legal fees and restitution payments, with West promising to reimburse her—a promise unfulfilled.
During his time under house arrest at Nancy Jones’ property, West acquired expertise in cryptocurrency trading and persuaded her to invest in various digital assets, including XRP, Ethereum, Dogecoin, Stellar Lumens, and Shiba Inu.
Legacy and Additional Context
Nancy Jones was married to George Jones from 1983 until his death in 2013. Following George Jones’ passing, efforts to manage the estate and related assets, such as the George Jones Museum, have been ongoing. West had involvement in opening the museum and was linked to subsequent sales of George Jones’ image rights and memorabilia.
