March 31, 2025 | By Daniel Obi

BusinessDay Media has reaffirmed its status as one of Nigeria’s leading business and financial digital news platforms, according to the recently released “RANKED2025 by SquirrelPR” study. This independent evaluation highlights BusinessDay’s prominent position as a trusted source for economic insights, market trends, and financial analysis in the country.

RANKED2025 Study Overview

The RANKED2025 report was launched in 2023 with the goal of providing marketing professionals with data-driven insights on digital news platform performance, focusing particularly on audience engagement metrics in 2025. The study encompasses a wide range of media platforms across Nigeria and extends to other African countries including South Africa, Egypt, Kenya, and Ghana.

Using twelve months of historical data sourced from Similarweb, the ranking criteria assessed web traffic, social media influence, and overall audience engagement. A total of 130 Nigeria-based digital news platforms were analyzed, covering several categories:

  • News & Current Affairs (56 outlets)
  • Business News (39 outlets)
  • Technology News (12 outlets)
  • Entertainment (23 outlets)

Across Africa, 148 digital media platforms were reviewed, including 58 News & Current Affairs outlets, 29 Business News platforms, 31 Technology News channels, and 30 Entertainment & Lifestyle sites.

BusinessDay’s Leading Position in Nigeria

For the pan-Nigeria rankings, BusinessDay Media distinguished itself as one of the top-performing platforms within the Business News category, achieving strong indicators in web traffic, social media presence, and user engagement. The platform’s ability to consistently provide accurate and timely business news was underscored as a key factor driving its audience growth and influence.

Other leading Nigerian platforms generating over one million annual visits in this category include Nairametrics, MSME Africa, Marketforces Africa, and Proshare.

In the broader Nigerian media landscape, Vanguard Online and Punch Online lead the News & Current Affairs category, while Techpoint Africa, TechCabal, and Technext dominate the Technology News sector. For Entertainment, top performers include Linda Ikeji Blog, NaijaPals, and Bella Naija.

Pan-African Insights and Trends

The study revealed that News & Current Affairs platforms command the majority of digital traffic across African markets, particularly in Egypt, South Africa, and Nigeria. Egypt’s Youm7 emerged as the continent’s most visited news website, with an astounding 450 million visits annually, followed by New24 in South Africa, and Nigeria’s Vanguard and Punch Online.

This data highlights a pronounced audience preference for political, social, and economic news across Africa. The report advises that news organizations must diversify their content formats—including multimedia, short-form stories, and newsletters—to maintain and grow audience engagement.

Moreover, niche platforms specializing in business, technology, and lifestyle content are experiencing rapid growth. These specialized platforms, despite having smaller readership bases than general news outlets, are achieving higher engagement rates due to their focused and relevant coverage.

The report encourages media houses to deepen investments in quality niche reporting such as fintech news, artificial intelligence trends, and startup ecosystems to attract and retain loyal digital audiences.

Social Media Influence as a Key Success Factor

A significant finding of the RANKED2025 study is the strong correlation between social media engagement and digital influence rankings. Platforms that effectively leverage cross-platform promotion across Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and other networks outperform those reliant primarily on traditional website visits.

BusinessDay Media’s consistently strong social media presence has thus played an integral role in its top-tier ranking and expanding reach.
