Barcelona Distances Itself from Sponsor’s Cryptocurrency Following Fan Backlash

By Liv McMahon, Technology Reporter

In a surprising development, Spanish football powerhouse Barcelona has publicly distanced itself from a cryptocurrency launched by its new sponsor amid growing concerns and criticism from fans. The club made clear it has "no connection whatsoever" with the digital coin offered by Zero Knowledge Proof (ZKP), a relatively obscure crypto firm that signed a three-year partnership with the club in mid-November.

Sponsorship Deal Sparks Controversy

While football clubs increasingly seek innovative sponsorships to bolster their revenue—ranging from Arsenal’s collaboration with detergent brand Persil to Manchester City’s partnership with Kellogg’s cereal—Barcelona’s association with ZKP has raised eyebrows. Following the announcement of the sponsorship, ZKP revealed the launch of its own cryptocurrency. This move alarmed many Barcelona supporters who feared they might be encouraged or misled into investing in the token.

Responding to the backlash, Barcelona issued a statement on its official website emphasizing that the club has no responsibility for or involvement in the issuance, management, or technology behind the ZKP cryptocurrency. “The club has no responsibility for, or involvement in, the issuance or management of this token, nor does it use the associated technology,” the statement read.

Questions over Transparency and Legitimacy

Details about Zero Knowledge Proof are scarce. The company’s website describes it as a project developed by a “pseudonymous collective” operating across “multiple jurisdictions,” effectively concealing the identities and locations of those behind it. The Financial Times revealed an earlier version of ZKP’s terms listed a supposed office in Apia, the capital of Samoa, but the firm denies having a single official headquarters.

ZKP also recently inked a similar sponsorship deal with the Australian rugby league team Dolphins, further expanding its presence in the sports sponsorship arena.

University of Sussex finance professor Carol Alexander cautioned supporters about the potential risks. She explained that association with a globally recognized brand like Barcelona lends “an aura of credibility” to the crypto firm, even if the underlying project lacks transparency. “There is substantial risk for supporters who buy the tokens,” she said, urging fans to exercise caution by thoroughly investigating who controls such crypto assets, reviewing the documentation, and understanding their protections if investments fail. “With ZKP, none of those answers are clear.”

Financial Pressures Prompt Risky Partnerships

Barcelona is currently grappling with significant financial challenges, struggling to raise revenue and reduce considerable debt. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire said the club seems to have adopted a “bank the money first, ask questions later” approach. He pointed out that cryptocurrency projects often seek legitimacy and normalization by associating with high-profile organizations, and partnering with a globally renowned club like Barcelona helps achieve that goal.

The sponsorship deal thus appears to be a way for ZKP to gain credibility and for Barcelona to secure much-needed funds.

Calls for Clarification Amid Additional Concerns

The sponsorship has also raised further concerns beyond financial risks. Former Barcelona youth player and prospective club president Xavier Vilajoana publicly requested clarity about how the partnership was established. On social media, he questioned the link between ZKP and notorious internet personality Andrew Tate, noting that Tate is one of only three accounts followed by ZKP’s official X (formerly Twitter) profile. Tate, known for controversial and self-proclaimed misogynistic views, adds a layer of reputational risk for the club.

Barcelona has yet to provide further comment regarding these inquiries.

Understanding the Terms

The name “Zero Knowledge Proof” refers to a blockchain technology technique that enhances privacy by allowing one party to prove knowledge of information without revealing the information itself. However, in this case, it refers to the crypto firm behind the sponsorship, rather than a technical concept.

Final Thoughts

The incident underscores the complexities and potential pitfalls when globally famous sports entities enter the rapidly evolving and often opaque world of cryptocurrencies. Fans are urged to remain vigilant and cautious about crypto investments linked to their favorite clubs, especially when transparency is lacking.
