SSM Health and UnitedHealthcare Reach Temporary Contract Agreement Amid Dispute

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — December 31, 2025 — SSM Health and UnitedHealthcare have announced a significant update in their ongoing contract negotiations. After earlier reports indicated stalled talks that threatened patient access to healthcare providers, the two organizations have signed a letter of agreement, providing a temporary resolution.

Earlier this month, First Alert 4 reported that contract discussions between SSM Health, one of the region’s leading healthcare providers, and UnitedHealthcare, a major insurance carrier, had reached an impasse. The failure to reach a new contract raised concerns that patients insured by UnitedHealthcare could be forced either to find new doctors outside the SSM Health network or face increased out-of-network costs beginning in the new year.

Hours ahead of a critical deadline, SSM Health confirmed it had signed a 30-day extension of the existing contract with UnitedHealthcare. This letter of agreement allows patients to maintain uninterrupted access to SSM Health physicians and services while both parties continue working toward a long-term multi-year contract.

Jeremy Fotheringham, Regional President of SSM Health in St. Louis and Illinois, emphasized the positive impact for patients: “This is a win for our patients and communities who deserve the high-quality care they know and trust. Our goal in contract negotiations has always been to maintain patients’ access to high-quality, affordable care for years to come.”

SSM Health also encouraged patients who had cancelled or postponed appointments due to the contract uncertainty to reschedule. Patients can do so via the MyChart online portal or by contacting their provider’s office directly.

This temporary agreement highlights the importance of resolving healthcare contract negotiations promptly to avoid disruptions in patient care access. Both SSM Health and UnitedHealthcare have committed to continuing discussions to establish a long-term partnership that will benefit the communities they serve.

For further updates, patients are advised to monitor official communications from both SSM Health and UnitedHealthcare.
