Addressing the Need for Persistent Identity and Trust in AI Agents

Crucially, ownership of these identifiers can be transferred, delegated, or updated, ensuring agent identities remain portable, censorship-resistant, and adaptable.

  2. Reputation Registry
    This registry collects structured, reusable feedback from clients—whether human users or other machines—about an agent’s performance. Reputation data is stored transparently on-chain as raw signals, while complex interpretation like scoring and filtering happens off-chain. Instead of ranking agents outright, the system promotes openness and reuse of reputation data across multiple applications.

  3. Validation Registry
    Agents can request independent verification of their work from trusted validators such as staked service providers, machine learning audits, or trusted hardware systems. These validation outcomes are recorded on-chain, providing visible proof of checks performed and by whom.

A Framework for Neutral Infrastructure, Not a Marketplace

Ethereum devs emphasize that ERC-8004 is designed as neutral infrastructure rather than a market platform. The standard deliberately excludes pricing, payments, or monetization models from its scope. Instead, it offers foundational rails for discovery and trust that higher-level protocols or applications can build upon according to their business needs.

This approach aims to foster a global, decentralized market where AI services can interact and transact seamlessly without centralized gatekeepers, further establishing Ethereum’s role as neutral infrastructure for the coordination of autonomous software agents across a fragmented AI ecosystem.
