Police Sergeant Dismissed for Using Picture Frame to Fake Work-from-Home Activity
Avon and Somerset Police have terminated the employment of a sergeant, referred to only as Sergeant X, after an investigation revealed she had used a picture frame to weigh down her laptop keys to simulate active work during remote shifts. This method prevented the laptop from entering sleep mode, falsely giving the impression she was working from home.
The misconduct occurred across the majority of shifts Sergeant X worked during April and May of the previous year. The officer admitted to employing this trick during a period of personal challenges. However, the police force’s professional standards department identified irregular activity levels monitoring data, noting her keystroke counts were significantly elevated—between three and eight times higher than those of her peers performing similar roles.
Following these findings, Sergeant X was dismissed without notice and has been barred from returning to the police service or any other law enforcement role. A formal hearing concluded that her actions amounted to gross misconduct.
Detective Superintendent Larisa Hunt of Avon and Somerset Police expressed disappointment in the officer’s behavior, emphasizing its potential to undermine public confidence in the force. She acknowledged the pressures officers face but reaffirmed that deliberately deceiving the trust placed in them is unacceptable.
The case highlights ongoing challenges in monitoring remote work and maintaining integrity among public service officers. Avon and Somerset Police continue to stress the importance of upholding professional standards to preserve the public’s trust.
