Fed Chair Jerome Powell, Treasury’s Bessent Meet Top Bank CEOs Over Anthropic’s Advanced AI Model

April 10, 2026 — Washington, D.C.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent convened a high-level, closed-door meeting on Tuesday with leading bank CEOs to discuss emerging cybersecurity risks tied to Anthropic’s newest artificial intelligence (AI) model, Mythos. According to sources familiar with the discussions, the gathering reflects growing concern within financial and government sectors about the rapid capabilities of cutting-edge AI technology and its implications for national security and economic stability.

Meeting Highlights and Attendance

The invitation-only meeting was held at the Treasury Department’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. The gathering brought together executives from major financial institutions to evaluate potential vulnerabilities posed by Mythos and similar AI tools. Notably, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon was invited but unable to attend, sources said.

The meeting had earlier been reported by Bloomberg News, which emphasized that Powell and Bessent had summoned these financial leaders to strategize about mitigating risks from advanced AI models like Mythos.

Anthropic’s Mythos: Breakthrough AI with Security Implications

Anthropic, a prominent AI developer known for its generative chatbot Claude, revealed on Tuesday that it is launching a collaborative initiative involving major technology companies including Amazon, Apple, and Nvidia to harness Mythos for bolstering cybersecurity defenses.

While acknowledging Mythos’s unprecedented capabilities to identify vulnerabilities in widely used operating systems and web browsers, Anthropic stated it would not release the model broadly due to safety concerns.

“Given the rate of AI progress, it will not be long before such capabilities proliferate, potentially beyond actors who are committed to deploying them safely,” Anthropic warned in a post about the new project, named Project Glasswing. The company emphasized the urgent need to use Mythos defensively to mitigate potential fallout affecting economies, public safety, and national security.

Government Response and Future Coordination

A Treasury Department spokesperson told CBS News that the government is actively urging financial institutions to prepare against evolving AI-driven cyber threats. Notably, the spokesperson emphasized ongoing engagement on AI security under the current administration and a White House-led interagency taskforce that includes the Treasury.

“Looking ahead, additional coordination meetings by Treasury are planned across regulators and institutions on an ongoing basis to address these developments, as well as a host of other issues,” the spokesperson said.

The Federal Reserve declined to comment on the meeting.

Background: AI and Financial Stability

In 2023, the Biden Administration officially recognized artificial intelligence as a potential risk to financial stability—a landmark designation signaling the seriousness with which AI threats are being evaluated in the context of the U.S. economy. CBS News had reported on this development at the time, highlighting the growing intersection between emerging technologies and economic governance.

Industry and National Security Implications

Anthropic’s Mythos AI model has attracted attention for its ability to detect cybersecurity flaws on a scale previously unseen. This cutting-edge capability has raised alarms about how advanced AI might be used maliciously if it falls into the wrong hands, underscoring critical concerns discussed during Tuesday’s meeting.

Anthropic’s effort, through Project Glasswing, seeks to proactively harness this powerful technology for defensive purposes by collaborating with industry leaders to strengthen digital infrastructure defenses across sectors.

CBS News will continue to monitor developments related to AI’s impact on cybersecurity, financial institutions, and national security.
