Roman Reigns Opens Up on The Rock, Cody Rhodes, and WrestleMania 40 Main Event
In a recent interview on the SI Media podcast with Sports Illustrated’s Jimmy Traina, WWE Superstar Roman Reigns shared candid thoughts about his WrestleMania 40 main event experiences, including the highly anticipated showdown involving The Rock and Cody Rhodes.
Reigns reflected on the whirlwind of speculation and backstage shifts regarding his opponent for WrestleMania 40. Originally, the marquee match was expected to feature Reigns versus Rhodes, the 2024 Royal Rumble winner. However, when Rhodes initially declined to challenge Reigns for the WWE Championship, the company appeared to pivot toward Reigns facing The Rock, his cousin and one of WWE’s biggest icons.
When asked if he was disappointed not to face The Rock, Reigns stated that being in the main event was what truly mattered. “I was the guy everyone wanted to dance with,” Reigns said. “It didn’t matter who it was. The task was the same: defend the title and stop history from being rewritten.”
Ultimately, fan backlash led to Rhodes reversing his earlier decision. This storyline change saw The Rock turning heel, adopting the new moniker “The Final Boss,” and aligning with Reigns. On Night 1 of WrestleMania 40, The Rock and Roman Reigns defeated Rhodes and Seth Rollins, but on Night 2, Rhodes defeated Reigns to capture the WWE Championship.
Looking ahead, Reigns did not rule out a future match with The Rock, emphasizing that the company listens to its fans. “If that’s what the people want and The People’s Champ is down, I’m sure we can make something happen,” he noted. The Rock made an unannounced return at the recent Bad Blood event but has yet to clarify his intentions in WWE.
Tommy Fury Hints at WWE Career Possibility
Boxer Tommy Fury has thrown his hat into the wrestling ring, teasing a potential future with WWE. In a recent YouTube video filmed backstage during WWE’s UK tour, Fury expressed admiration for WWE superstars and seemed open to the idea of stepping into the squared circle.
“Big up to Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, Gunther, the lot of them,” Fury said. “Thank you to WWE for showing us such appreciation. I look forward to possibly climbing through those ropes one day. Who knows?”
Tommy, the younger brother of former world heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury, has established his own boxing credentials with an undefeated 10-0 record and holds the notable distinction of being the only boxer to defeat Jake Paul. Given his connections to the Paul family—Logan Paul is a WWE star and a former U.S. Champion—Fury’s potential crossover could ignite a fresh mainstream rivalry, possibly even leading to brother vs. brother tag team showdowns.
Oba Femi’s NXT Absence Sparks Rumors
Meanwhile, former NXT North American Champion Oba Femi has reportedly been absent from the NXT scene for the past month, according to Fightful Select. Femi’s last televised appearance was at Halloween Havoc on October 27, where he dropped the title to Tony D’Angelo, ending his reign at a record 272 days.
Since then, there have been no reports of Femi backstage at tapings, fueling speculation. The reasons for his absence remain unclear, though insiders suggest it could be a strategic break to reset after consecutive losses or potentially a precursor to a main roster call-up.
After a dominant run that included winning the NXT Breakout Tournament and his lengthy championship reign, Femi remains a highly regarded contender. Fans and WWE officials alike will be watching closely to see if he returns to pursue the NXT Championship, potentially dethroning current titleholder Trick Williams.
