Roman Reigns Reflects on The Rock, Cody Rhodes, Tommy Fury Eyes WWE Career, and Oba Femi’s NXT Absence
By Mike Chiari – Bleacher Report – November 27, 2024
The WWE Universe has been abuzz with recent developments, including Roman Reigns’ candid comments about his WrestleMania 40 opponents, rising star Tommy Fury’s hints at a wrestling future, and NXT’s Oba Femi reportedly stepping back from the spotlight. Here’s a detailed look at the latest wrestling news shaping the industry.
Roman Reigns Talks WrestleMania 40, The Rock, and Cody Rhodes
Roman Reigns recently appeared on Sports Illustrated’s SI Media podcast where he shared insights about the evolving main event scene at WrestleMania 40. The Original Tribal Chief opened up about his mindset facing Cody Rhodes at the biggest WWE event of the year.
When asked by host Jimmy Traina whether he was disappointed to face Rhodes instead of his cousin and WWE legend The Rock, Reigns made it clear that being in the main event was what mattered most. “It doesn’t matter to me. I was the main event. I’m the guy that everyone wanted to dance with,” Reigns explained. “They are trying to stop history from happening. It’s the same task in hand for me.”
The storyline at WrestleMania 40 had initially suggested The Rock would challenge Reigns for the WWE Championship after Rhodes won the 2024 men’s Royal Rumble, only for Rhodes to later decide against pursuing the title match. This led to The Rock’s heel turn as “The Final Boss,” aligning himself with Reigns. Together, they defeated Rhodes and Seth Rollins on Night 1 of WrestleMania 40. However, Rhodes ultimately defeated Reigns in the Night 2 main event to capture the WWE Championship.
Addressing the long-anticipated Rock versus Reigns showdown that did not take place, Reigns acknowledged it may still be possible if the fans demand it. “If that’s what the people want and The People’s Champ is down, I’m sure we can make something happen,” he said, underscoring WWE’s responsiveness to fan enthusiasm.
The Rock made a surprise return at Bad Blood last month but has not made any further appearances or clarified his future intentions, leaving the door open for a potential clash, especially with Survivor Series’ upcoming WarGames match showcasing rival factions within The Bloodline.
Tommy Fury Hints at WWE Aspirations
Internationally renowned boxer Tommy Fury, younger sibling of former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, has signaled interest in stepping into WWE’s squared circle. In a recent YouTube video captured backstage at a WWE UK tour event, Fury expressed admiration for several WWE stars including Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, and Gunther.
“Thank you to WWE for showing us such appreciation. And I look forward to possibly climbing through those ropes one day. Who knows?” Fury remarked, leaving fans curious about his wrestling ambitions.
Tommy Fury, boasting a perfect 10-0 professional boxing record and known for being the only person to defeat Jake Paul, could be a natural contender for a crossover between boxing and wrestling. His connection with the Paul family also hints at potential storylines involving Logan Paul, who is an active WWE Superstar and former United States Champion.
Given WWE’s interest in broad appeal and mainstream crossover stars, Fury’s possible entry into the wrestling world is an exciting prospect for fans.
Oba Femi’s Absence from NXT Raises Questions
Former NXT North American Champion Oba Femi has been absent from WWE’s NXT programming since late October, after a loss to Tony D’Angelo at Halloween Havoc. According to Fightful Select, no backstage sightings or discussions about Femi’s status have emerged since that event.
Femi, who debuted on NXT television in April 2023, quickly rose to prominence by winning the Breakout Tournament and capturing the North American Championship from Dragon Lee. His title reign lasted an impressive 272 days before he fell to D’Angelo, also losing a subsequent rematch at Halloween Havoc.
The reasons for Femi’s recent absence remain unclear. It could be a strategic move to allow him to regroup after two significant defeats or perhaps preparation for a call-up to WWE’s main roster. Alternatively, Femi might be recuperating from an injury or being held off TV to maintain storyline momentum.
When he eventually returns, Femi is widely viewed as a strong contender to challenge for the NXT Championship, potentially replacing the titleholder, Trick Williams.
