Coinbase’s Base Launches AI Tool Enabling ChatGPT to Manage Crypto Wallets and DeFi Applications
In a significant advancement at the intersection of artificial intelligence and blockchain technology, Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer 2 network, Base, has unveiled “Base MCP,” a novel AI integration tool that allows users to manage their cryptocurrency wallets and decentralized finance (DeFi) applications via popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Cursor. This new product embodies a promising step towards simplifying onchain interactions by leveraging conversational AI.
Base MCP employs the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an emerging industry standard designed to enable secure communication between AI systems and external applications. By connecting a user’s Base Account with AI agents through MCP, the tool allows for seamless interactions involving sending funds, swapping tokens, checking balances, reviewing transaction histories, and engaging with DeFi platforms — all through simple chat-based prompts rather than traditional, often complex crypto interfaces.
“We see Base MCP as a crucial first step toward making the onchain economy easier to use via AI,” Coinbase stated. “Instead of forcing users to jump between apps, parse protocol interfaces, or know exactly which action to take, Base MCP lets your agent help you navigate the ecosystem in a more personalized and understandable way.”
At launch, Base MCP supports integrations with several prominent DeFi protocols on the Base network, including the decentralized exchange Uniswap, lending platforms Morpho and Moonwell, and the perpetuals trading platform Avantis. These integrations empower users to interact with lending markets, supply assets to vaults, manage liquidity positions, and trade perpetual futures through conversational AI commands instead of navigating dedicated apps or web portals.
The initiative aligns with growing industry interest in “agentic systems” — AI-powered agents capable of autonomously executing blockchain transactions and interacting with decentralized applications. Proponents believe that AI agents can substantially lower the barriers for mainstream adoption by abstracting wallet management complexities and streamlining protocol navigation.
Base views this development as part of a broader vision for the future of the internet, where AI-native interfaces and chat-based agents become primary gateways for discovering and using blockchain-based applications. “Over time, we believe agentic chat interfaces will become an important surface for app discovery and distribution,” the company remarked. “As more people use agents as their primary internet interface, apps will need a new way to show up inside those environments.”
This launch emphasizes Coinbase’s continued commitment to enhancing user experience in the cryptocurrency space by integrating cutting-edge AI technology with blockchain infrastructure. As digital assets and DeFi continue to grow in complexity, tools like Base MCP offer a promising avenue to democratize access and usability for a wider audience.
