British Olympian CJ Ujah Faces Court Over Cryptocurrency Fraud and Cannabis Supply Charges

CJ Ujah, a British sprinter and Olympian known for his athletic achievements on the track, has recently been implicated in serious criminal allegations. The 32-year-old athlete appeared in court alongside nine other defendants, all accused of involvement in an organized cryptocurrency fraud scheme. In addition to the fraud charges, Ujah also faces separate accusations related to the supply of cannabis.

Court Proceedings and Allegations

The group appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court where they faced claims of operating a sophisticated scam targeting victims through fraudulent phone calls. The accused allegedly posed as police officers or representatives from cryptocurrency companies, deceiving victims into divulging sensitive security information. This information was then exploited to steal funds from victims’ cryptocurrency wallets. Reports indicate that one victim suffered a loss exceeding £300,000 as a result of the scam.

During the hearing, none of the defendants entered pleas. Several of those accused, including Brandon Mingeli, Louis Richards-Miller, Joseph Umoru, and Jami Durston, were remanded into custody. The remaining individuals, including Ujah, were granted bail pending the next court date scheduled for 24 July.

Athletic Career and Previous Controversies

CJ Ujah, hailing from Enfield, North London, first came to prominence in the athletics world by becoming the fifth British sprinter to break the 10-second barrier in the 100 meters, clocking a remarkable 9.96 seconds in 2014. He secured a gold medal in the 4x100m relay at the 2017 World Championships held in London.

At the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Ujah ran in the 4x100m relay final. However, following the event, he tested positive for two banned substances, leading to the British team being stripped of their silver medal. Subsequent investigations cleared him of intentionally taking prohibited substances, but the incident remains a notable episode in his career.

Other Defendants

Alongside Ujah, the other individuals charged include:

  • Brandon Mingeli, 25, Thamesmead, also facing charges related to possession of false identity documents.
  • Louis Richards-Miller, 24, Greenwich
  • Taiwo Yusuf, 24, Greenwich
  • Kehinde Yusuf, 24, Greenwich
  • Jayden Nakayama, 25, Greenwich
  • Joseph Umoru, 24, Abbey Wood
  • Adedeji Kujore, 24, Erith, Kent
  • Samantha Gyabaa, 23, Hackney
  • Jami Durston, 28, Chelmsford

Next Steps

The case remains ongoing with the defendants scheduled to return to Chelmsford Crown Court later this summer. Given the complexity of the allegations, further investigations and court proceedings are anticipated.

Public and community reaction to the charges against a high-profile athlete like Ujah has been mixed, highlighting the broader challenges of crime involving emerging digital currencies and their vulnerabilities.
