British Olympic Sprinter CJ Ujah Appears in Court Over Alleged Cryptocurrency Scam

Chelmsford Crown Court, UK — British Olympic sprinter CJ Ujah, known for representing Team GB at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, appeared in court on Thursday facing serious allegations linked to an elaborate cryptocurrency scam. The 32-year-old athlete is accused alongside nine other defendants of conspiring to defraud multiple victims through a sophisticated scheme impersonating police officers and cryptocurrency companies.

Details of the Alleged Scam

Prosecutors allege that the organised crime group targeted victims by making phone calls posing as officials from law enforcement and digital currency firms. Through these deceptive tactics, victims were tricked into revealing sensitive security information related to their cryptocurrency wallets. Following these interactions, many victims reportedly discovered that their funds had been unlawfully stolen. One victim is believed to have lost over £300,000 as a result.

The defendants face charges of conspiracy to defraud, with the Regional Organised Crime Unit Network overseeing the investigation. During Thursday’s hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court, none of the 10 defendants, including Ujah, entered a plea. The group’s next scheduled court appearance is on 24 July.

Additional Cannabis Supply Charge Against Ujah

Besides the primary fraud allegations, CJ Ujah also faces a separate charge linked to the supply of cannabis, dated 29 April.

Athletic Career Highlights

CJ Ujah, who hails from Enfield, north London, is a notable figure in British athletics. He became the fifth Briton to break the 10-second barrier in the 100-metre sprint, clocking a time of 9.96 seconds in 2014. Ujah has represented Great Britain on multiple international stages, including competing in the 4x100m relay final at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. He was also part of the gold-medal-winning 4x100m relay team at the 2017 World Championships held in London.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

The court proceedings are ongoing, and the charges against Ujah and his co-defendants remain allegations at this stage. The next hearing in July will provide further opportunities for the defendants to respond to the serious accusations they face.
