Elderly Woman Loses £250,000 in Cryptocurrency Scam in Newry
An elderly woman from Newry, Northern Ireland, has fallen victim to a sophisticated online cryptocurrency scam, losing more than £250,000 of her life savings. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed the incident following a report made on 21 May by the woman, who is in her seventies.
According to the PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch, the victim initially invested a relatively small sum after responding to an online advertisement promoting a cryptocurrency scheme. Over time, she was persuaded to send increasingly larger amounts. Det Insp Moffett explained that the scammers convinced the woman to invest more money with the false promise of recovering her initial investment.
The fraudsters also instructed her to unknowingly download malware, which gave them unauthorized access to her electronic devices. This allowed them to transfer further funds directly from her accounts without her knowledge.
Superintendent Joanne Gibson from the Scamwise Partnership emphasized the importance of vigilance in financial activities. She urged the public to take a moment to verify unusual financial requests and to engage in conversations with family members about the risks of fraud.
“We know that this type of crime can have a far-reaching impact, but we can all work together to protect and prevent this from happening to those we care about,” Supt Gibson said. She also highlighted the manipulative tactics used by fraudsters, warning that they can be extremely convincing and inventive in their schemes.
The PSNI reaffirmed its commitment to using all available resources to protect the community from fraud and urged anyone who suspects they have been targeted to come forward.
