Crypto to Stocks: A Digital Revolution Reshaping Investment in South Africa

By Simon Brown, Moneyweb | 3 June 2026

The fusion of cryptocurrency and traditional stock investments is ushering in a digital revolution in South Africa’s financial landscape. Since the launch of tokenised stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) last August, Luno, a prominent crypto exchange, has witnessed remarkable growth and adoption, particularly among younger investors.

Rapid Adoption of Tokenised Stocks

Christo de Wit, country manager for Luno South Africa, shared insights on the platform’s progress in a recent interview. "Since we launched tokenised stocks in August last year, we’ve now crossed the 50,000 customer mark," he revealed. This milestone underscores the growing appetite for digital investments that blend the worlds of traditional finance and cryptocurrency.

Tokenised stocks offer investors the opportunity to buy fractional shares of U.S.-based equities and ETFs using blockchain technology. This approach makes high-value stocks more accessible while enabling exposure to a broader range of investment opportunities.

Popular Choices Reflect Traditional Portfolios

De Wit noted that the top five tokenised assets on Luno’s platform closely mirror popular picks in the traditional investment sphere. Leading the demand are Tesla shares and gold ETFs, followed by Nvidia, MicroStrategy, and the S&P 500 ETF. "People are looking to create diversified portfolios that combine growth tech stocks with safer options like gold and broad market ETFs," he explained.

This strategy highlights investor preferences for balancing risk with stability — a familiar approach in the conventional investment world now being applied in the digital asset space.

Diverse Investment Options and Bundled Products

To cater to the evolving investor demands, Luno has developed bundled product offerings combining cryptocurrencies and tokenised stocks. One such option allocates 30% to crypto assets and 70% to tokenised stocks, providing users with diversified portfolios designed to capture opportunities across asset classes.

Currently, Luno offers over 50 tokenised stock options, focusing on major U.S. names with significant market interest. The platform continues to monitor developments in tokenised assets to expand its offerings responsibly.

Engaging New and Existing Investors — Especially Younger Generations

Interestingly, de Wit revealed that tokenised stocks are attracting both existing crypto investors and newcomers to Luno’s platform. "Many of our tokenised stock investors are coming to the platform and investing in tokenised stocks immediately — before engaging with crypto," he said.

The demographic data supports this trend: the majority of tokenised stock investors are under the age of 35, a younger cohort even compared to Luno’s crypto users. Furthermore, the average initial investment in tokenised stocks exceeds that of crypto, averaging just above R1,500. This indicates a mature mindset among younger investors, keen on leveraging innovative products to build their portfolios.

The Crypto Native Generation Embraces Tokenisation

Growing up in an era where Bitcoin and blockchain technologies are well-known investment options has shaped this younger generation’s approach to investing. "They don’t really need to have a physical share certificate," de Wit noted. "For them, exposure and accessibility are what matter when building their wealth."

Tokenised assets are perfectly suited to this mindset by providing fractional ownership and digital transferability, simplifying the investment process without compromising on legitimacy or returns.

Benefits for South African Investors

From a local perspective, Luno’s tokenised stocks offer direct access to U.S. equities without the typical exchange control restrictions that affect traditional brokers. Dividends from these tokenised assets are automatically reinvested, enhancing portfolio growth over time. While regulatory frameworks around crypto and tokenised assets are still developing in South Africa, the current environment provides notable advantages for investors seeking seamless international market access.

A Glimpse into the Future of DeFi

This digital integration of tokenised stocks and crypto represents a tangible realization of decentralized finance (DeFi) principles. "We’re seeing changing investor behavior and categorization," said de Wit, highlighting how these innovations challenge and expand traditional notions of asset ownership and investment.

As adoption grows, even older investors—who might be less familiar with crypto—are beginning to recognize the potential of tokenised stocks as a mainstream investment vehicle.

For South African investors, Luno’s success story marks the beginning of a new era — where digital assets and traditional stock markets converge, unlocking opportunities for broader participation and portfolio diversification. With its youthful user base and dynamic product offerings, this digital revolution is set to redefine investment strategies for years to come.
