The recent public release of Anthropic’s advanced AI model, Fable 5—also known as Claude Mythos—has ignited an intense debate within the cryptocurrency community concerning blockchain security and the future of decentralized finance (DeFi). While the model promises to uncover critical software vulnerabilities at scale, experts remain divided over whether smart contracts or broader operational security represent the greatest threat to crypto ecosystems.

Anthropic’s Fable 5: A Dual-Edged Sword

Earlier this year, Anthropic revealed that its Mythos AI had identified over 10,000 high- and critical-severity vulnerabilities across major software projects. This impressive feat showcased the model’s potential to enhance cybersecurity, but also raised concerns about the consequences of releasing such powerful technology publicly. In response, Anthropic launched Fable 5, embedding strict safeguards aimed at preventing misuse. Additionally, some cybersecurity tasks are redirected to a related model, Claude Opus 4.8, to maintain tighter control.

Despite these precautions, the launch has kept security worries alive among blockchain developers, crypto investors, and security experts who fear that enabling public access to such a tool might make it easier for malicious actors to discover and exploit vulnerabilities.

Experts Weigh In: Smart Contract Flaws or Operational Security?

The crypto sector remains split on where the most significant risks lie. Simon Dedic, founder of Moonrock Capital, warned that advanced AI models like Fable 5 could lower the barrier for cybercriminals to identify weaknesses in smart contracts, especially those unaudited or poorly secured. "Attackers may require less skill and fewer resources to spot critical flaws," Dedic cautioned, urging users to practice rigorous wallet permission reviews and minimize exposure to risky DeFi protocols. He also recommended the use of hardware wallets as an added layer of defense against potential threats.

Conversely, Michael Egorov, co-founder of Curve Finance, expressed skepticism about the direct applicability of Fable 5’s strengths in conventional large-scale software systems to the more compact and specialized smart contract codebases. Instead, Egorov argued the more significant vulnerabilities might stem from operational security lapses. He highlighted incidents involving compromised multisignature wallets, supply chain attacks, and weaknesses in frontend dependencies as meaningful risks that could undermine decentralized applications even when underlying smart contracts remain secure.

Expanding the Conversation Beyond Code

The discussion triggered by Fable 5 goes beyond smart contract auditing, emphasizing the broader cybersecurity landscape in decentralized ecosystems. Anthropic has indicated that a selected group of cybersecurity and infrastructure organizations will have access to a more permissive version of Claude Mythos 5, contrasting with the carefully controlled public Fable 5 release.

What Lies Ahead for Crypto Security?

Anthropic’s public deployment of Fable 5 has brought renewed attention to the ongoing challenges of securing blockchain networks and DeFi platforms. While the model’s ability to detect vulnerabilities at scale offers promising benefits, the divided opinions among experts underscore the complexity of balancing technological advances with security risks.

The biggest takeaway for the crypto community is the importance of vigilance: developers and users alike must remain proactive in reviewing security protocols, leveraging available tools, and adopting best practices to safeguard their assets.
