Nebraska Fortifies Cryptocurrency Landscape with New Fraud Prevention Law

Governor Pillen Signs Legislation to Combat Cryptocurrency Fraud in Nebraska

LINCOLN, NE — On March 12, 2025, Governor Jim Pillen signed into law Legislative Bill 609, which introduces significant protections against cryptocurrency fraud, particularly for users of cryptocurrency kiosks and ATMs. The new law, known as the Controllable Electronic Record Fraud Prevention Act, reflects a bipartisan effort supported by law enforcement agencies to enhance consumer protection in the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency market.

Governor Pillen emphasized the importance of this legislation in his announcement, stating, “Cryptocurrency is an important, emerging industry — and we’ve been working hard to build Nebraska into a cryptocurrency leader. An important part of these efforts is to make sure that we have guardrails to prevent criminals from taking advantage of Nebraskans. We look forward to continuing to lay the groundwork for a safe and robust crypto industry in our state. This is good news for consumers.”

The legislation is aimed at increasing transparency in the cryptocurrency sector, ensuring that consumers engaging with cryptocurrency transactions can do so with confidence. Nebraska Department of Banking Director Kelly Lammers reinforced the state’s commitment to supporting lawful cryptocurrency businesses while implementing strategies to deter fraudulent activity. “Nebraska is open for business in the cryptocurrency space,” Lammers noted. “That also means we need to increase transparency to assure those doing legal business in the State of Nebraska that you are absolutely welcome.”

As part of the new regulatory framework, the law establishes oversight mechanisms that target entities engaging in unlawful practices, particularly those that exploit Nebraska citizens through the use of Crypto ATMs. The bill aims to create a more secure environment for cryptocurrency transactions while fostering the growth of legitimate businesses operating in the state.

The implementation of LB609 signifies a proactive approach by Nebraska’s government to embrace the cryptocurrency industry responsibly while safeguarding consumers from potential exploitation. The administration pledges to continue building on this foundation to ensure a safe and innovative cryptocurrency landscape in Nebraska.

With this legislative milestone, the state underscores its dedication to becoming a leader in the cryptocurrency market, committed to balancing growth with consumer safety and security.
