Philip Walton, a representative from the Kenya-based company Gridless, has established one of these unusual bitcoin mines located near the Zambian town of Zengamina. Housed within a shipping container, 120 computers work tirelessly to verify bitcoin transactions, generating both cryptocurrency and a new economic lifeline for the local community. This mining operation is uniquely powered by a hydro-electric plant that harnesses the might of the Zambezi, providing a steady and cost-effective source of clean energy.
“This is the sound of money!” Philip exclaimed as he inspected the bustling mining unit. The collaboration with the hydro plant has become mutually beneficial, ensuring that miners can operate profitably while also contributing to the grid’s financial viability.
The Hydro-Electric Plant and Community Impact
Originally constructed in the early 2000s through charitable donations, the Zengamina hydro-electric plant was designed to provide electricity primarily for a local hospital. After years of struggling financially due to low energy consumption in the community, the partnership with Gridless has transformed the plant’s operational prospects. Daniel Rea, who manages the facility, shared, “Every day we were wasting over half of the energy we could generate. The bitcoin mine now accounts for about 30% of our revenue.”
With financial stability bolstered by the bitcoin mine, the plant can maintain affordable electricity rates for the surrounding community of approximately 15,000 residents, drastically changing daily life for many.
Transforming Lives with Electricity
For many in Zengamina, electricity’s arrival has reshaped their existence. Local residents, including barber Damian, have experienced firsthand the benefits of reliable power access. “When I got power, I bought everything at the same time," he laughed, noting how his barber shop has become a social hub, illuminated with bright lights and entertainment.
Sisters Tumba and Lucy Machayi echoed similar sentiments, recalling how life before electricity felt stagnant. “It was basically just the bush," Lucy noted, highlighting the community’s previous reliance on small solar panels that provided minimal power for essential needs.
A Sustainable Future on the Horizon
While the bitcoin mining operation currently thrives on its partnership with Zengamina’s hydro-electric plant, the future may hold new challenges. Plans are in motion for the plant to expand its reach and connect to the national grid, which could render bitcoin mining here less profitable. However, Philip and his team remain optimistic, stating, “We will have had a successful few years here.”
Gridless is already looking beyond Zengamina, with ambitions to establish additional hydro-electric plants designed for cryptocurrency mining while delivering power to other rural areas across Africa. Co-founder Janet Maingi emphasized the importance of sustainable energy models in uplifting local communities, stating, “We have an abundance of untapped hydro potential.”

Despite the optimistic outlook, Gridless faces resistance from some local authorities concerned about bitcoin mining’s energy demands. The cryptocurrency industry has garnered mixed reactions globally, with some regions clamping down on what is perceived as excessive energy use. For the initiative to be sustainable, agreements ensuring that energy demands do not compromise local needs will be paramount.
