ITS Launches Blockchain Research Center to Strengthen Indonesia’s Economy

Surabaya, Indonesia – December 23, 2024 — The Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) proudly inaugurated the Indonesia Blockchain Center (IBC) ITS Chapter on December 19, 2024, marking a significant stride toward enhancing the country’s technological and educational landscapes. The establishment of the first of its kind in Indonesia is supported by the Dubai Blockchain Center, demonstrating ITS’s commitment to collaboration and innovation in the field of blockchain technology.

A Vision for Economic Growth

During the inauguration ceremony held at the ITS Research Center Auditorium, Dr. Ir. Arman Hakim Nasution, the head of ITS’s Public Policy Studies Center for Business and Industry, highlighted the initiative as a crucial step in developing Indonesia’s blockchain ecosystem. He emphasized that blockchain technology—which employs a secure and decentralized method of data storage—holds immense potential for various sectors and is poised to play a vital role in the advancement of Indonesia alongside artificial intelligence and semiconductor technology.

Arman noted that the integration of blockchain across 12 key sectors, which include energy, supply chain and logistics, education, economy, transportation, digital security, urban development, environment, and health, has already proven successful in enhancing economic performance in places like Dubai. He expressed optimism that the presence of the IBC in Indonesia could help achieve an eight percent growth in the nation’s economy.

Enhanced Security and Integrity

The benefits of blockchain stem from its robust data security features, which drastically reduce the possibility of fraud through its transparent registry processes. Arman reiterated the importance of this system, stating that the collaborative nature of blockchain enhances security by distributing key control among various stakeholders.

Commitment to Education

Furthermore, the establishment of the IBC, in partnership with PT Digital Syariah Teknologi, promises to foster educational advancements in the field of database security. The academic community at ITS is set to become a leader in the latest technological knowledge, positioning graduates for competitive advantage in a global job market.

The center will provide an array of facilities, including a dedicated laboratory within the ITS Department of Business Management. This will offer training opportunities and internships for students, aligning with the mission of the IBC to equip the next generation with essential technological insights. "Our focus moving forward will be on the development and education surrounding blockchain technology," Arman stated confidently during the event.

A Bright Future Ahead

As ITS continues to enhance its role as a hub of technological advancement and research in Indonesia, the IBC’s official launch represents a foundational step in utilizing blockchain as a catalyst for economic and educational progression. The institute aims to not only support local innovations but also place Indonesia on the global map in the evolving digital landscape.

The successful collaboration between ITS and international partners serves as a model for future initiatives as the country seeks to harness technology to drive economic growth and develop a skilled workforce ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
