Florida Teens Accused of Kidnapping Las Vegas Man and Stealing $4 Million in Cryptocurrency
LAS VEGAS, NV — Three teenagers from Florida are facing serious charges after allegedly kidnapping a Las Vegas man at gunpoint and stealing approximately $4 million in cryptocurrency and other digital assets. The incident, which occurred last November, has drawn significant attention to the rising crime involving digital currencies.
Details of the Incident
According to police reports, the victim was hosting a cryptocurrency event in downtown Las Vegas when he was approached by the suspects, identified as Belal Ashraf and Austin Fletcher, both 16 years old from Pasco County, Florida, and a third unnamed teenager. The suspects forced the victim into their vehicle, threatening his life and his father’s safety if he did not comply with their demands.
During the ordeal, the victim was blindfolded and instructed to remain quiet as the suspects demanded access to his financial accounts. Prosecutors later revealed that a third individual was communicating with the teenagers via phone, providing them with instructions during the kidnapping.
The suspects allegedly transported the victim more than 70 miles across the Nevada border to a remote area in White Hills, Arizona. Once released, the victim was able to walk five miles through the desert to a gas station, where he called a friend for assistance.
Arrests and Legal Proceedings
Following the incident, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department launched an investigation, aided by the FBI, which led to the identification of the suspects. Authorities tracked a vehicle linked to the teens traveling from Florida to Nevada, and evidence from a traffic stop in Mississippi connected them to the crime.
Both Ashraf and Fletcher were later certified as adults in a juvenile court, allowing them to face more severe charges including kidnapping, robbery, and extortion. Fletcher’s public defender sought to have him placed under house arrest, but as of recent hearings, his bail was set at $4 million.
In a separate hearing regarding Ashraf, his attorney requested a similar arrangement, and while Ashraf was ordered to be released, he was placed under electronic monitoring as a condition of his release.
Prosecutors indicated that a preliminary hearing is scheduled for June, during which more evidence and testimonies may be presented.
