Ogun Pensioners Commend Governor Abiodun for N6.7 Billion Gratuity Payment Approval
By Taiwo Bankole
In a significant boost to the welfare of retirees in Ogun State, the Ogun State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners has expressed heartfelt gratitude to Governor Dapo Abiodun for approving a massive N6.7 billion for the payment of accumulated gratuities owed to pensioners. This announcement was made during a statement released on Sunday by the union’s chairman, Waheed Oloyede.
According to Oloyede, the allocation includes N3.2 billion designated for retirees from the state government and an additional N3.5 billion for local government retirees. This financial relief is expected to significantly mitigate the hardships faced by many retirees who have endured delays in receiving their gratuities.
Oloyede acknowledged Governor Abiodun’s efforts by stating, “Your Excellency, this gesture demonstrates your commitment to the welfare of senior citizens whose entitlements have been denied over the years. We are deeply grateful for the kindness and generosity you have shown towards us, the elderly. No doubt, the payment of the gratuities will bring great relief and comfort to many individuals and families.”
In addition to the gratuity payment, the union also commended the governor for the timely disbursement of monthly pensions. Oloyede emphasized how this consistency has aided pensioners in planning for essential health services and other welfare needs. He remarked, “We also express immense appreciation for the various palliatives and subsidies directed towards us pensioners in the recent past to cushion the effects of the present harsh economic realities.”
However, the union articulated a request for further support, urging the governor to approve an expected consequential increase in pensions as per the 2019 Federal Government circular regarding pension adjustments. Oloyede highlighted that although a committee was established in July 2022 to address this issue, the necessary adjustments have yet to be implemented, which continues to place financial strain on retirees amid soaring prices for essential goods and medication.
The union concluded its statement by praising Governor Abiodun’s leadership and reaffirming its hope that he will continue to prioritize improving the quality of life for both retirees and the broader community in Ogun State.
As pensioners await the resolution of their requests, the approval of the gratuity payment marks a significant step in providing financial relief to many who have dedicated their lives to public service.
