French Police Investigate Series of Violent Kidnappings Linked to Cryptocurrency Executives
French authorities are unraveling a disturbing series of kidnappings connected to the burgeoning cryptocurrency sector, elevating concerns about safety among industry leaders. The recent incidents have involved brutal tactics, including ransom demands and acts of violence against the victims, prompting investigations by organized crime units in Paris.
Latest Incident: Daughter of Crypto Executive Ambushed in Paris
The most recent attack occurred on Tuesday morning, when the daughter of a prominent cryptocurrency executive was violently ambushed on Rue Pache in the 11th arrondissement of Paris. Video footage of the incident, which has circulated widely on social media, shows three masked men emerging from a parked van in a bid to wrestle the 34-year-old woman to the ground. Despite a chaotic struggle during which the assailants attempted to abduct her, they ultimately retreated and fled in their van.
The victim is reported to be the daughter of the co-founder of Paymium, a French cryptocurrency exchange platform. Although authorities have yet to confirm her identity, they have initiated a thorough investigation into the incident. The Paris police’s organized crime unit is leading the inquiry, with a focus on determining whether this latest case is connected to a growing number of similar events involving cryptocurrency executives.
Previous Kidnapping Incident Involving Crypto Marketing Executive
This ambush follows a distressing kidnapping incident that took place on April 29. In that case, a 60-year-old owner of a crypto marketing firm was kidnapped by four armed assailants while walking in Paris’s 14th arrondissement. The man, who co-owned a business with his son in Malta, was held captive for more than two days and found mutilated—reportedly with one of his fingers severed. The assailants had demanded a ransom ranging from £4 million to £6 million, but no money was exchanged before law enforcement intervened.
Law enforcement officials managed to rescue the victim during a raid at a property in Essonne, located approximately 12 miles south of Paris. Five suspects aged between 20 and 27 were arrested in connection with the incident.
Other Noteworthy Cases
The wave of kidnappings in the cryptocurrency sector has included several alarming cases before these incidents. For instance, on January 21, David Balland, co-founder of the crypto firm Ledger, was abducted along with his wife from their home in Mereau, central France. In that brutal attack, the couple was separated, and Balland was held captive, during which one of his fingers was cut off. Authorities were alerted by his business partner, who received a video demanding a €10 million cryptocurrency ransom. After a police investigation, Balland was rescued, while his wife was found bound in a vehicle.
Additionally, in December of last year, the father of a renowned cryptocurrency influencer was kidnapped at their home in eastern France. He was taken alongside his family, and a ransom demand was made to his son, who lives in Dubai. Police quickly managed to free the family members, but the father was discovered in a deplorable state.
Government Response and Industry Concerns
In light of these incidents, French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has vowed to meet with leaders in the cryptocurrency sector to discuss safety measures and the escalation of violence facing executives within this rapidly growing industry. Authorities are urging individuals in the cryptocurrency community to enhance personal security protocols to protect themselves against these violent crimes.
As investigations into these kidnappings continue, the links between cryptocurrency and organized crime are becoming increasingly apparent, leading to urgent calls for increased protective measures within this volatile landscape.
