Police Shoot Man Armed with Machete Outside Crypto.com Arena in Downtown Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES — Police officers shot a man who was reportedly armed with a machete outside the Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday morning, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:20 a.m. near the intersection of Figueroa Street and Olympic Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Officers were dispatched after receiving multiple reports of a man waving what appeared to be a machete in the street, causing alarm among bystanders.
Upon arrival, officers encountered the suspect who advanced toward their position. The man then entered the driver’s seat of a black Dodge Challenger and began to drive away, prompting law enforcement to initiate a brief pursuit. The chase proceeded southbound on Figueroa Street.
The pursuit concluded just south of 12th Street, where the man stopped his vehicle and exited still wielding the machete. Officers reported that the suspect charged at them, which led to them opening fire and striking him.
Emergency medical personnel transported the man to a nearby hospital, where he remained in surgery as of 3 p.m. Sunday. His identity has not yet been publicly released by authorities.
The machete was recovered at the scene and is currently held as evidence. No officers were reported injured during the encounter.
As a result of the incident and ongoing investigation, the portion of Figueroa Street between 12th Street and Pico Boulevard was closed for several hours, causing traffic disruptions in the area.
This shooting is part of a series of recent law enforcement responses to violent incidents in the Los Angeles area. Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the event and have not released further details at this time.
