Ethereum Foundation Launches $1 Million Audit Subsidy Program to Enhance Crypto Security
April 14, 2026 — The Ethereum Foundation has announced a transformative initiative aimed at addressing one of the most persistent challenges in the blockchain space: the high costs associated with smart contract security audits. On Tuesday, the foundation revealed a $1 million Audit Subsidy Program designed to ease financial burdens for developers and promote safer, more secure decentralized applications across the Ethereum ecosystem.
Tackling Security Challenges with Financial Support
Smart contract audits are critical to ensuring that blockchain applications are free from vulnerabilities and secure against attacks. However, the high expense of conducting these audits has often deterred smaller teams and emerging projects from undertaking thorough security reviews. Recognizing this barrier, the Ethereum Foundation’s new subsidy program offers financial assistance to help offset these costs, thereby encouraging broader adoption of robust security practices.
“The subsidy program makes audits accessible and strengthens the Ethereum ecosystem,” the foundation said in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter).
A Strategic Part of the "Trillion Dollar Security" Initiative
This program is a key component of the foundation’s broader “Trillion Dollar Security” campaign, a visionary effort to fortify Ethereum’s infrastructure as it continues to scale and accommodate increasingly complex applications and higher transactional volumes. By investing in security at this scale, the foundation aims to safeguard the growing economic value being transacted on Ethereum’s network.
Partnerships and Access to Expertise
To maximize reach and impact, the Audit Subsidy Program involves collaboration with prominent ecosystem participants including Nethermind, Chainlink Labs, and Areta. Through these partnerships, the program connects builders with over 20 top-tier audit firms. This network not only provides access to experienced security professionals but also streamlines the process for developers seeking audits.
Selected project teams can directly apply the subsidy funds toward their audit services via Areta’s platform, ensuring an efficient and transparent subsidy disbursement process.
Introducing the CROPS Principles Framework
Alongside the subsidy rollout, the foundation introduced a new framework known as the “CROPS principles,” an acronym standing for censorship resistance, open source, privacy, and security. This framework serves as a guideline for how applications should be built and evaluated within the Ethereum ecosystem, reinforcing foundational values that underpin decentralized development.
Inclusive and Open to All Builders
The program welcomes submissions from any project building on the Ethereum mainnet, regardless of size or development stage. Interested teams submit their projects for review by an expert committee, which evaluates eligibility and selects recipients based on predefined criteria.
Strengthening Ethereum’s Future
As Ethereum continues to evolve, initiatives like the Audit Subsidy Program highlight the foundation’s commitment to fostering innovation without compromising security. By lowering audit costs and promoting best practices, the program aims to empower developers to build safer applications which, in turn, helps protect users and the entire network.
