World’s Most Powerful Passports Ranked: UK Moves Up a Place
Friday 23 January 2026, 09:23 UK Time — By Sarah Taaffe-Maguire, Business and Economics Reporter
The latest Henley Passport Index update has revealed a new ranking of the world’s most powerful passports, highlighting significant movements among various countries, including an upward shift for the United Kingdom.
Singapore Tops the Ranking
Singapore has reclaimed the top spot as the holder of the most powerful passport globally. Singaporean passport holders enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 192 countries worldwide, securing their position ahead of Japan and South Korea, who come in second with access to 188 countries each.
Strong Performance by European Nations
Coming in at a joint third place on the list are five European countries: Luxembourg, Denmark, Spain, Switzerland, and Sweden. All these passports provide access to 186 countries without a visa. A larger group of European nations, including Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Ireland, Netherlands, and Norway, follow closely, providing wide global access to their citizens.
UK Improves its Standing
The United Kingdom has edged up from eighth place to seventh in the latest ranking, reflecting a slight improvement in travel freedom for British passport holders. This positive movement underscores the UK’s continued relevance in global mobility despite geopolitical changes in recent years.
Moreover, the United States, which was once the most powerful passport holder back in 2014 and had slipped out of the top 10 in last October’s ranking, has made a comeback to sit firmly in 10th place on its own.
