California Grandpa Possibly Kidnapped in Cryptocurrency-Related Plot, FBI Joins Investigation

Rancho Cucamonga, CA — Authorities are urgently searching for 74-year-old NaiPing Hou, a Southern California grandfather who disappeared under suspicious circumstances in March 2025. Investigators now suspect Hou’s disappearance may be linked to an elaborate plot targeting his family’s substantial cryptocurrency assets.

A Disappearance Shrouded in Mystery

NaiPing Hou was last seen on March 16, 2025, in Rancho Cucamonga, California. Although reported missing several weeks later on May 4, recent developments have escalated the case from a mysterious disappearance to a potential kidnapping investigation. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department initially handled the case but has since enlisted the help of the FBI to aid in the search and investigation.

Signs Point to Foul Play

The circumstances surrounding Hou’s disappearance have raised significant alarms. After he vanished, over $1 million was drained from his bank accounts through unauthorized transactions. These transactions involved the purchase of gold bars and additional cryptocurrency assets, a suspicious pattern given Hou’s reportedly limited familiarity with digital finance.

Adding to the concern, family friends who visited Hou’s home found it completely emptied of furniture and personal belongings, suggesting someone deliberately tried to erase his presence. Authorities also uncovered that his vehicles had been sold off, and there were attempts to rent out his house, actions inconsistent with Hou’s normal routine.

Suspicious Communications and Robo-Texts

Hou’s family noticed unusual activity via his phone after his disappearance. Wen Hou, NaiPing’s son and a notable cryptocurrency hedge fund executive, received robotic and impersonal text messages from his father’s number, raising fears that an impostor was communicating with the family.

In one instance, Wen Hou sent his father a gift of handmade Chinese noodles for his birthday on May 3, 2025, but received a text reply stating “Yes I receive it.” However, when others checked, the noodles remained untouched on the front porch. Similarly, Hou’s wife—who was in China at the time—received strange messages urging her to delay her return to the United States, further fueling suspicions of coercion or impersonation.

Possible Motive: Cryptocurrency Wealth

Investigators and the family believe that NaiPing Hou was targeted because of the family’s success and wealth in the cryptocurrency space. Wen Hou emphasized that his father was not tech-savvy, making the cyber actions and digital transactions conducted in his name highly suspicious and likely carried out by someone exploiting Hou’s identity.

Call for Information and Reward Offered

Authorities are keen to gather any information that might lead to Hou’s safe return or identify those responsible for his disappearance. Of particular interest is a silver Toyota Yaris linked with the case. The Hou family has established a dedicated website to collect tips and provide updates on the investigation.

A reward of up to $250,000 is being offered for any credible information leading to the resolution of this case. Members of the public with relevant information are urged to contact the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department or the FBI immediately.

Physical Description

NaiPing Hou is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing approximately 170 pounds, with black and gray hair, black eyes, and a distinctive birthmark on his upper left shoulder.

This ongoing investigation highlights the complex and sometimes dangerous intersections of cryptocurrency wealth and personal security. Law enforcement officials continue to pursue all leads in hopes of bringing NaiPing Hou home safely.
