Nuvei Secures Crypto-Asset Service Provider Licence in the European Union

December 18, 2025

Nuvei, a global payment technology provider, has been officially granted the crypto-asset service provider licence under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR). This significant regulatory milestone positions Nuvei to expand its crypto-asset related services across all EU member states via a harmonised regulatory framework.

Regulatory Milestone Under MiCAR

The new MiCAR framework aims to bring clarity and uniformity to the regulation of crypto-assets within Europe, ensuring consumer protection and fostering innovation. By obtaining this licence, Nuvei can now offer a suite of regulated crypto-asset services including cryptocurrency storage, administration, fund transfers, and the exchange of crypto-assets into traditional funds.

Phil Fayer, Nuvei’s Chair and CEO, highlighted the importance of this development, stating: “This authorisation marks an important milestone in the convergence of payments and digital assets. MiCAR brings long-needed regulatory clarity to Europe. Operating under this framework allows us to help customers move value across crypto and traditional payment rails with confidence, consistency, and scale.”

Broadening Service Offerings With Payment Institution Licence

In addition to the MiCAR authorisation, Nuvei has also obtained a Payment Institution licence. This enables the company to also offer services related to electronic money tokens (EMTs), thereby creating a unified and regulated platform that supports crypto-asset, EMT, and fiat-based payment and settlement flows.

This comprehensive licensing allows Nuvei to serve both business clients and retail consumers throughout Europe. Retail users will benefit from straightforward crypto service access, while business customers gain from efficient settlements, crypto acceptance capabilities, and transparent blockchain-based fund movement integrated into broader payment and treasury workflows.

Integration into Global Payments Infrastructure

Nuvei’s regulated crypto services are seamlessly integrated into its global payments infrastructure. This support facilitates merchants and platforms aiming to deploy crypto-enabled payment and settlement solutions across multiple European markets. For customers, it translates to greater ease in accessing compliant fiat-to-crypto and crypto-to-fiat flows, faster and more transparent settlement options, and reduced regulatory and operational complexities when scaling across EU countries.

Recent Developments and Strategic Enhancements

The licensing comes at a time when Nuvei is actively expanding its presence in the European payments landscape. Last month, the company announced that its eCommerce merchants have started processing transactions through the European Payments Initiative’s (EPI) Wero digital wallet. Additionally, Nuvei incorporated Visa Direct for Account into its worldwide platform, enabling businesses to transfer funds directly to bank accounts of consumers and workers in eligible nations.

Looking Ahead

With these licences, Nuvei is well-positioned to drive the digital transformation of payments, offering regulated and innovative crypto-asset services aligned with evolving European regulations. This development marks a critical step forward for Nuvei’s mission to facilitate seamless, compliant, and scalable payment solutions integrating both traditional and digital assets.
