Ryanair to End Printed Boarding Passes This Autumn: What Travelers Need to Know

From November 2025, Ryanair will no longer accept printed boarding passes, requiring all passengers to present digital boarding passes via the airline’s "myRyanair" app. This significant change, announced by the budget carrier, aims to streamline the check-in process and reduce environmental waste by saving an estimated 300 tonnes of paper annually.

What’s Changing for Ryanair Passengers?

Currently, Ryanair passengers have flexibility when it comes to boarding passes. They can:

  • Use a digital boarding pass on the "myRyanair" app
  • Print a boarding pass at home
  • Obtain a printed boarding pass at the airport for a ÂŁ20 fee

Starting this coming autumn, printed boarding passes will no longer be accepted at all. All travelers will need to check-in and present their digital passes via the app to gain boarding access.

Why the Move?

Ryanair reports that approximately 80% of its 200 million annual passengers already use the digital check-in system. By moving to a fully digital pass system, the airline expects to provide a smoother, faster customer experience while making a positive environmental impact by reducing massive paper usage.

What If Your Phone Battery Dies?

A common concern with digital-only boarding passes is phone battery life. Ryanair has reassured passengers through consumer advocacy group Which? that airport staff will remain available to assist. If a passenger’s phone is dead or the app cannot be accessed, staff will verify passenger details against the flight manifest manually to ensure boarding proceeds without issues.

Exceptions for Some Destinations

Ryanair highlights that mobile boarding passes are not yet accepted in Turkey and Morocco. Passengers traveling to these countries must still print a boarding pass in advance to comply with local requirements.

Alongside this Ryanair update, other personal finance highlights include tips on broadband contract exit fees and recently emerging news about car finance compensation. For instance, some broadband providers now offer to cover early termination costs up to several hundred pounds when customers switch to their services, making it easier and cheaper to change providers.

In other news, Martin Lewis of MoneySavingExpert.com explained that many motorists mis-sold car finance deals could receive compensation, though amounts are typically in the hundreds of pounds rather than thousands.

What This Means for You

If you’re planning to fly with Ryanair later this year or beyond, it’s important to download the “myRyanair” app and familiarize yourself with how digital check-ins work. Double-check requirements for your specific destination, especially if traveling to Turkey or Morocco where printed passes remain necessary.

By embracing digital boarding passes, Ryanair passengers can expect a faster check-in process and contribute to a greener travel experience.
