Sallanches: Double Kidnapping Linked to Cryptocurrency Resolved Within 48 Hours

January 17, 2026 – Haute-Savoie, France

A recent kidnapping case in Sallanches, Haute-Savoie, connected to the growing phenomenon of crimes related to cryptocurrency, has been successfully resolved within 48 hours, according to information from ODS Radio.

A Rapid Police Intervention

On January 15, 2026, authorities responded to a kidnapping in Sallanches involving two victims, reportedly a person from the educational sector and their spouse. Thanks to swift police action, both individuals were found and are currently being treated in a hospital.

This incident marks one of several kidnappings linked to the cryptocurrency world that have been occurring with increasing frequency in France. The surge in such crimes has prompted the creation of a specialized unit—the National Prosecutor’s Office against Organized Crime (Parquet National Anti-Criminalité Organisée, PNACO)—established at the start of 2026 to tackle these complex cases.

PNACO’s Role in Investigations

Jordan Abedi, Vice-Prosecutor and Secretary-General of PNACO, confirmed that the office is handling multiple ongoing cases involving organized kidnappings and extortions with cryptocurrency ties. Apart from earlier interventions in Charente-Maritime, Sarthe, and Maine-et-Loire, PNACO has now taken charge of the Sallanches kidnapping.

“We have taken on a fourth procedure related to similar crimes committed between January 14 and 15 in Haute-Savoie,” PNACO stated. “The victims were located and are currently receiving care in a medical facility.”

Broader Implications and Continuing Investigations

Beyond the immediate resolution of the kidnapping, authorities continue to pursue investigations into associated offenses, including organized money laundering, extortion, and participation in a criminal association.

The rise in criminal activity connected to cryptocurrencies is creating new challenges for law enforcement agencies, necessitating a coordinated and specialized response. The establishment of PNACO underlines the French judiciary’s commitment to combating these emerging threats efficiently.

Context of Cryptocurrency-Related Crime Surge

In recent months, kidnappings tied to the cryptocurrency ecosystem have become more frequent, highlighting vulnerabilities exploited by criminal organizations. The anonymous and decentralized nature of cryptocurrencies often complicates investigations, underlining the need for robust legal and operational frameworks.

The Sallanches case serves as a critical reminder of the real-world dangers linked to cyber-financial crimes and the importance of rapid, coordinated action among law enforcement bodies.

Additional Information

  • Victims are reportedly connected to the education sector.
  • Authorities continue probing money laundering and extortion elements linked to the case.
  • PNACO’s efforts also cover similar cases in other French regions.
