U.S. Secret Service Expands Global Effort to Combat Cryptocurrency Scams

In an effort to combat the rising tide of cryptocurrency fraud, the United States Secret Service has launched an ambitious international initiative aimed at unraveling crypto scams and strengthening law enforcement capabilities worldwide.
At the heart of the campaign is a concerted effort to educate and collaborate with foreign law enforcement agencies. Recently, Jamie Lam, an investigative analyst and technical advisor with the Secret Service, shared insights and training with police officers and prosecutors in Bermuda. During a session held at the Police Headquarters in Prospect, Lam described how scammers lure victims into fake cryptocurrency investment platforms through seemingly harmless initial contact.
“They’ll send you a photo of a really good-looking guy or girl,” Lam explained, “but it’s probably some old guy in Russia.” This tactic is part of an elaborate deception: scammers establish trust with victims by showcasing professional-looking websites complete with real-time charts, customer support, and initial small returns. These feigned profits encourage victims to invest larger sums — sometimes even borrowing money — before the scammers abruptly vanish, taking the victims’ entire balance with them.
This modus operandi underscores the sophistication and global reach of modern crypto fraud networks, which often operate across multiple jurisdictions, complicating traditional investigative efforts.
To counter this, the Secret Service is building a dynamic, cross-border network of law enforcement partners. Through joint training, information sharing, and coordinated operations, the agency aims to trace fraudulent cryptocurrency flows and disrupt illicit actors wherever they are. The initiative leverages the Secret Service’s longstanding expertise in financial crimes but adapts it to the evolving challenges posed by decentralized digital currencies.
The global rise of cryptocurrency has opened new avenues for both innovation and criminal exploitation, prompting agencies like the Secret Service to expand their focus beyond physical currency counterfeiting and traditional cybercrimes. As cryptocurrency adoption grows, so does the imperative for a concerted, international approach to enforcement.
The initiative in Bermuda represents just one step in this broader global push.
