Roman Reigns Discusses The Rock, Cody Rhodes, and WrestleMania 40; Tommy Fury Hints at WWE Future; NXT Update on Oba Femi

By Mike Chiari | Bleacher Report – November 28, 2024

Bleacher Report brings you the latest updates and insider news from the WWE Universe, including insights from WWE superstar Roman Reigns, a potential WWE future for boxer Tommy Fury, and recent developments in NXT involving Oba Femi.

Roman Reigns Reflects on WrestleMania 40 Main Event vs. Cody Rhodes, Future Match with The Rock

Roman Reigns appeared on the SI Media podcast with Jimmy Traina this week, providing candid thoughts on his high-profile WrestleMania 40 matchup against Cody Rhodes and the possibility of facing The Rock down the line.

Reigns addressed the shifting plans leading up to WrestleMania 40, where it was initially unclear whether he would face The Rock or Rhodes in the main event. When asked if he was disappointed to end up facing Rhodes rather than The Rock, Reigns said:

"It doesn’t matter to me. I was the main event. I’m the guy that everyone wanted to dance with, you know. I am the hot chick, everyone wanted to take me out. It’s where, we just need to get there and defend this thing. It didn’t matter who it is. They are trying to stop history from happening. They are trying to take us off the pinnacle right now, so it was the same task in hand for me."

The storyline saw Rhodes initially win the 2024 men’s Royal Rumble but then opting not to challenge Reigns for the WWE Championship, signaling The Rock as the potential opponent. However, fan backlash led to Rhodes changing course, which resulted in The Rock turning heel as "The Final Boss" and teaming with Reigns. The Rock and Reigns defeated Rhodes and Seth Rollins in Night 1’s main event at WrestleMania 40, but Rhodes ultimately reclaimed the WWE title from Reigns on Night 2. Regarding the possibility of a Rock vs. Reigns match in the future, Reigns expressed openness depending on fan interest:

"I think our fanbase and the company’s proven that if our fans are loud enough and passionate enough about something, we’re a company who—we’re not being dictated to. We have a vision for where we’re trying to go, but we know who the consumers are. We know who’s paying their hard-earned money, and we want to satisfy those people."
"If that’s what the people want and The People’s Champ is down, I’m sure we can make something happen."

The Rock made a surprise return at WWE’s Bad Blood event last month but has not fully revealed his intentions or made further appearances since. With the upcoming WarGames match at Survivor Series, speculation is mounting that The Rock may reappear and potentially set the stage for a much-anticipated showdown with his cousin, Reigns.

Tommy Fury Teases Potential WWE Career

Boxer Tommy Fury, younger brother of former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, recently shared glimpses of a possible future in professional wrestling with WWE. Posting a video from backstage during WWE’s United Kingdom tour, Fury praised WWE stars such as Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, and Gunther, and hinted at climbing through the wrestling ropes someday:

"So guys, that is a night at the WWE complete. All the wrestlers showing love. Big up to Randy Orton. Absolutely amazing guy. Big up to Cody Rhodes, all of them, Gunther, the lot of them. Thank you to the WWE for showing us such appreciation. And I look forward to possibly climbing through them ropes one day. Who knows? But it’s been a great night."

Tommy Fury holds an undefeated professional boxing record of 10-0 and is notably the only boxer to have defeated Jake Paul. His familial ties and sports background make him a natural fit for WWE, especially as a potential rival or tag partner linked to the Paul brothers, whose involvement with WWE has drawn mainstream attention. Tyson Fury himself had a one-match WWE stint at Crown Jewel 2019 and made a memorable appearance at WWE’s Clash at the Castle in 2022. —

Oba Femi Absent from NXT Following Recent Losses

Reports reveal that Oba Femi, former NXT North American Champion, has not been seen on NXT programming or at tapings for over a month following his loss to Tony D’Angelo at Halloween Havoc on October 27. Fightful Select (via Ringside News) notes there has been no indication that Femi has been backstage since the title loss that ended his historic 272-day reign, as well as a subsequent rematch defeat. The absence could be for several reasons, including time to regroup after consecutive losses, possible injury, or simply a creative decision to allow the story lines to breathe.

Since debuting on NXT in April 2023, Femi made a strong impression by winning the NXT Breakout Tournament and capturing the North American Championship. His return could position him as a leading contender for the NXT Championship, possibly challenging current titleholder Trick Williams.
