Crypto investor Christopher Harborne donates record £9 million to Reform UK
Reform UK, the political party led by Nigel Farage, has received a record-breaking donation of £9 million from cryptocurrency investor and aviation entrepreneur Christopher Harborne. This contribution, confirmed by the Electoral Commission, marks the largest single donation ever made by a living individual to a British political party.
Christopher Harborne, a British citizen residing in Thailand, has a history of supporting political parties in the UK, having previously donated significant sums to the Conservative Party during Boris Johnson’s leadership and to Reform UK’s predecessor, the Brexit Party, in 2019 and 2020. His recent £9 million donation came on August 1 and is seen as a major boost to Reform UK ahead of the local elections scheduled for May next year.
Breaking Donation Records
Harborne’s donation surpasses the previous record held by supermarket magnate Lord David Sainsbury, who gave £8 million to the Liberal Democrats in 2019. It is worth noting that Harborne’s cousin, Lord John Sainsbury, bequeathed £10 million to the Conservatives in his will in 2022. Christopher Harborne’s business interests include AML Global and Sherriff Group, both companies linked to the private aircraft and aviation industry.
Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, has been an advocate of cryptocurrency. In May, his party became the first in the UK to accept donations in Bitcoin. However, Harborne’s generous donation was made in traditional currency, not cryptocurrency. Farage stated that he communicates with Harborne roughly once a month or every six weeks and emphasized that he had not promised the investor anything in exchange for the donation. Farage added, “Does he want anything from me? No. Absolutely nothing in return at all. He just happens to think that we’ve not made the most of Brexit, that we’re not getting into the 21st Century technologies.”
Significant Impact on Party Donations
According to the Electoral Commission’s latest figures, Reform UK received a total of over £10.2 million in donations between July and September, surpassing the Conservative Party’s £4.6 million, Labour’s £2.1 million, and the Liberal Democrats’ £1 million during the same period. Aside from Harborne’s record donation, the next largest single contribution was £1 million from games programmer and tech entrepreneur Jeremy Elliott San to the Conservatives. Labour’s largest donor in that quarter was the Unite union, contributing £362,625, while the Liberal Democrats received their biggest single donation of £50,000 from Neale Powell-Cook, a food supply business owner.
This is the first quarter since last year’s general election in which Reform UK has out-raised the Conservatives in donations. A spokesperson for Reform UK stated that the figures demonstrate “the incredible progress” the party is making and reflect its growing momentum in British politics. However, combining all donations since July 2024, the Conservatives still lead with roughly £14.4 million compared to Reform UK’s £13.5 million.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch acknowledged Harborne’s donation but described it as a “one-off” event. She highlighted the wider range of Conservative donors and expressed confidence in the party’s fundraising performance, noting that the latest figures indicate “our best performing quarter” under her leadership.
Liberal Democrat spokesperson Lisa Smart expressed concern over the scale of large donations, stating, “Our elections are not being fought on an even footing if they can be bought by a small handful of individuals.”
Public Funding and Transparency
Political parties in the UK must report all donations exceeding £11,180 to the Electoral Commission, ensuring transparency in political financing. Besides donations, opposition parties receive public funding to support their parliamentary duties, allocated based on prior election performance. Between July and September, Reform UK received £227,835 in public funds, considerably less than the £2.3 million awarded to the Conservatives and the £1 million for the Liberal Democrats.
Looking Ahead
While the next UK general election is not scheduled until 2029, the substantial donation to Reform UK arrives at a time when the party has been leading national opinion polls consistently since spring. Harborne’s record contribution underscores the growing influence of cryptocurrency investors and entrepreneurs in British politics as the landscape prepares for upcoming local elections and beyond.
